    In 1974, B.B. King brought the blues back to Africa. Invited to take part in the three-day music festival which featured the legendary boxing match between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, King played before a crowd of over 80,000 Africans and delivered a performance considered by many to be one of the greatest of his phenomenal career. B.B. King filled the night with his raw power, searing energy and heart stopping emotion. This inspiring classic concert, shot by Academy-Award winner Leon Gast (When We Were Kings), even has Ali sitting in the audience.

    Born April 25, 1958, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Derek William Dick (aka Fish) was the dramatic lead vocalist for prog rock band Marillion until beginning a solo career in 1988. Marillion was initially formed as an instrumental band in 1979 by guitarist Steve Rothery (b. November 25, 1959; Brampton, England), drummer Mick Pointer, bassist Doug Irvine, and keyboard player Brian Jelliman. Irvine began singing in 1980 on the group's first demos, but a year later Marillion invited Fish to join as vocalist, and he assumed the frontman position beginning with their 1983 debut album, Script for a Jester's Tear.

    In her forward to the Jazz Icons Series 3: Rahsaan Roland Kirk live in '63 and '67, Dorthann Kirk praised the DVD for showing her husband's talent "as a complete musician and not just a musical freak who played three horns simultaneously." That said, Kirk may not ever be seen as a jazz musician. He was no more typical a musician than Art Tatum.

    Genre: Rock | Label: Quantum Leap | Copy: Untouched | Release Date: 24 Sep 2007 | Runtime: 50 min. | 1,59 GB (DVD5)

    Barclay James Harvest was, for many years, one of the most hard luck outfits in progressive rock. A quartet of solid rock musicians John Lees, guitar, vocals; Les Holroyd, bass, vocals; Stuart "Wooly" Wolstenholme, keyboards, vocals; and Mel Pritchard, drums with a knack for writing hook-laden songs built on pretty melodies, they harmonized like the Beatles and wrote extended songs with more of a beat than the Moody Blues.

    Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-lived bands, staying together for over 40 years. During much of that time, the band was only successful in the U.K., where it racked up a string of Top Ten singles across the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s.

    Even being quite a Simon and Garfunkel fan, and a keen follower of Paul Simon's solo career, wasn't enough to convince me that Paul Simon could cut it live without "Artie". Sure, I have enough of his solo albums to know that he can still write great songs, but a live Paul Simon solo performance is something I have never been overly interested in seeing.

    The Sweet - Here And Now (2003)
    Video: PAL, MPEG-2 at 5 500 Kbps, 720 x 576 (1.333) at 25.000 fps | Audio: AC-3 6ch. at 448 Kbps, PCM 2ch. at 1 536 Kbps
    Genre: Rock | Label: TDK | Copy: Untouched | Release Date: 19 Aug 2003 | Runtime: 76 min. | 4,10 GB (DVD5)

    In some ways, the Sweet epitomized all the tacky hubris and garish silliness of the early '70s. Fusing bubblegum melodies with crunching, fuzzy guitars, the band looked a heavy metal band, but were as tame as any pop group. It was a dichotomy that served them well, as they racked up a number of hits in both the U.K. and the U.S. Most of those hits were written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, a pair of British songwriters that had a way with silly, simple, and catchy hooks.

    For nearly three decades, Lee Ritenour has been one of the world's foremost light jazz artists. Mixing a smooth urban vibe with the occasional soul/funk jive, his efforts have attempted to walk the razor-thin tightrope between the avant-garde and the accessible. In 2004, the gifted guitarist decided to call together a collection of colleagues and former band mates, and make an album celebrating music from the process of "making," not marketing. Assembling such luminaries as pianist Dave Grusin;

  • Judas Priest - Electric Eye (2003)  DVD9

    Judas Priest - Electric Eye (2003)
    Video: PAL, MPEG-2 at 5 614 Kbps, 720 x 576 (1.333) at 25.000 fps | Audio: AC-3 6ch. at 448 Kbps, AC-3 2ch. at 256 Kbps
    Genre: Rock | Label: Sony | Copy: Untouched | Release Date: 24 Nov 2003 | Runtime: 168 min. | 7,38 GB (DVD9)

    This DVD has quite a bit of material on it that will satisfy any Judas Priest fan. Contained on it are 13 music videos, a live concert of 19 songs (used for the Priest… Live! album), five TV appearances and a discography. Now, I believe the more crammed on a DVD the better, regardless if the material is pointless or not. That way I feel I am getting more value and the DVD becomes a worthwhile purchase. Even if the DVD has a few pointless features, someone is going to find those particular features worth taking a look at.

    Live performance from the Joshua Redman Quartet, recorded at Tokyo's Blue Note in 1998.
    Every few years it seems as if the jazz media go out of their way to hype one young artist, overpraising him to such an extent that it is easy to tear him down when the next season arrives. In the early '90s, Joshua Redman briefly became a media darling, but in his case, he largely deserved the attention.

    One of the great swing/Dixieland cornetists, Ruby Braff went through long periods of his career unable to find work because his music was considered out-of-fashion, but his fortunes improved by the 1970s. A very expressive player who in later years liked to build his solos up to a low note, Braff's playing was instantly recognizable within seconds.
